Serves as Assistant to the Collector-Magistrate in the Indian Civil Service. After training an Assistant would have initially been posted to a District Station. After a year the Assistant would go to a Sub-Division of the District. Usually it was a remote station where he is the only white occupant other than the odd planter. His role was magistrate with accounting and treasury tasks along with being postmaster.

Benefits of the position were game shooting - especially controlling big game that pestered the locals. An Assistant will take 10 years to rise through the ranks to become a Collector-Magistrate.
