"......Zhob Valley expedition of October & November 1890 under Sir George White (later C-In-C in India). The aim of the expedition was to survey some of the mountainous terrain in Baluchistan on the North West Frontier as well as to test, and demonstrate to the local tribespeople, the endurance and enterprise of the troops in some potentially difficult and hostile terrain and generally to make the British presence felt. They met with very little opposition and suffered minimum losses in what amounted to a largely 'explorative rather than militant' expedition. (Sir George White in his report to the Indian Government.)

Troops making up the Field force were -

No.7 Mountain Battery, Royal Artillery
2nd Battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (B,C,E,& F,Companies)
18th Bengal Lancers
No.1 Company, Bombay Sappers & Miners
2nd & 3rd Battalions of Beluchis (2 sections of the 29th & 30th Bombay Infantry)
2 sections of the British Field Hospital
2 sections of the 24th British Field Hospital
3 sections of the 25th Native Field Hospitals
(Men in the Native Infantry battalions totalled 550)"
