The [[Bengal (Province)|Province of Benga]]l at the end of the 19th century was a huge administrative area. It was hoped that dividing it between the mainly Hindu west (comprising [[West Bengal ]] with [[Bihar]] and [[Orissa]]) and the mainly Muslim east would be a political and administrative improvement. Partition was confirmed in October 1905. Opposition by Hindu nationalists eventually led to the re-uniting of Eastern Bengal with western Bengali districts and the creation of [[Assam]] as a separate province in 1912.
