Many of the Germans in India in the late 1700s-early 1800s were, or had been, soldiers. They were recruited by the East India Company as part of entire regiments such as the [[Hanoverian Regiments]], or Wurttemberg Regiment, regiments for hire which in todays terms would be considered mercenary regiments.
