The Subordinate Medical Department (sometimes abbreviated to Sub Medical Department) was the uncovenanted branch of the medical service (as opposed to the covenanted Indian Medical Service). Therefore, staff were mainly recruited locally.

The European section consisted of Apothecaries, Stewards, Assistant Apothecaries, Assistant Stewards and those in training for these roles, called Hospital or Medical Apprentices.
