Indian Subordinate Medical Department

The Subordinate Medical Department (sometimes abbreviated to Sub Medical Department) was the uncovenanted branch of the medical service (as opposed to the covenanted Indian Medical Service).

Formed by the East India Company to provide medical services to Indian Natives in 1812, this service lasted until Independence. The staff were recruited in India and the senior positions were occupied by persons of British origin. In later years, Anglo-Indians and then native Indians were able to gain the more senior positions.

The European section consisted of Apothecaries, Stewards, Assistant Apothecaries, Assistant Stewards and those in training for these roles, called Hospital or Medical Apprentices.
