The 'Khost Colliery', owned by North Western Railway(NWR) opened in 1877 to supply coal for the NWR. The other collieries supplying NWR were the Dandot Colliery and the Sharigh Colliery . The Colliery was situated in the 'Khost-Sharigh-Harnai Coal Belt' some 30-40 mile (48-64km) east of Quetta, and at an altitude ofabout 4,000 feet(1,200 metres). These coal mines were approachable from the Sibi-Zardalu section of the NWR .
