The 'Khost Colliery', owned by [[North Western Railway]](NWR) opened in 1877 to supply coal for the NWR. Reference: Entry PP14 page ....</ref>.  The Colliery was situated in the 'Khost-Sharigh-Harnai Coal Belt' some 30-40 mile (48-64km) east of [[Quetta]], and at an altitude ofabout 4,000 feet(1,200 metres). The records show that in 1902 a 18 inch/1ft 6 in/457mm narrow gauge([[Rail_gauge#Narrow_Gauge|NG]]) tramway from Mine No.12 to Mine No.13, with rope incline at the middle, was under construction; due to be opened in March 1903. It was reported in 1904-05 that mule transport had been replaced on the main hillside tramway by an 18 inch locomotive <ref name =BA06>“Industrial Railways and Locomotives of India and South Asia” compiled by Simon Darvill.
