Situated in Garhwal District, Western District of the Kumaun Division, United Provinces, between Dehra Dun 150 km to the north, and Naini Tal and Almora to the south, Lansdowne was a cantonment established in 1887. Originally named Kaludanda, on 21 September 1890 it was renamed Lansdowne after the then Viceroy of India, Lord Henry Lansdowne
