Mahanadi Canal Construction Tramway

The Mahanadi Canal, Upper Mahandi Division, Railpur was constructed under the supervision of the Central Provinces Public Works Department (PWD) as a canal from the Mahanadi River. The work commenced in 1917 and arrangements were made to hire tramway plant for the project, a small part w<as received in March 1918 but the Indian Army commandeered the rest to use in Mesopotamia. By 1919 the PWD sought priority assistance from the Indian Munitions Board for plant urgently required. The plant, including a light tramway was put up for sale in 1931 [1].
