A zone of Indian Railways (IR), formed on 14 April 1952 from the merger of the Oudh and Tirhut Railway, the Assam Railway and the Kanpur-Achnera section of the Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway.


Bifurcation

On 15 January 1958, North Eastern Railway was split into two zones, being Northeast Frontier Railway, the Pandu region of the former North Eastern Railway with the exception of the Purnea (exclusive)—Murliganj and Banmankhi—Behariganj Sections, and the remainder left as North Eastern Railway.
