The Quilon-Trivandrum Extension Railway was an extension of the South Indian Railway(SIR) network from Quilon+, to Trivandrum+.

The SIR were given sanction in 1913 [1] for the extension of railway line from Quilon to Trivandrum beach (present Pettai Station) and it was opened for traffic on 1 January 1918. In 1926 the extension of this line from Trivandrum Beach to the heart of the city, that is Thampanoor (the present-day Thiruvananthapuram Central), was completed in 1931. [2]

+Note Quilon (since renamed Kollam), Trivandrum (since renamed Thiruvananthapuram)

Records

Refer to FIBIS Fact File #4: “Research sources for Indian Railways, 1845-1947” - available from the Fibis shop. This Fact File contains invaluable advice on 'Researching ancestors in the UK records of Indian Railways' with particular reference to the India Office Records (IOR) held at the British Library

An on-line search of the IOR records relating to this railway [1] gives the following: -

  • L/F/7/2175 “Collection 370/20: Railways: Miscellaneous: South Indian Railway, terms for construction and working of Quilon-Trivandrum extension; 1913-19”
