Originally called the The '''Rajputana State Railway'''was formed by the joining of the [[Rajputana - Agra District Railway]] and the [[Rajputana - Delhi District Railway]]. The line was metre gauge(RSR[[Rail_gauge_#Metre_Gauge|MG]]), and the initial construction started in 1873 and 1874 was to link . [[Delhi]] was linked to [[Agra]] via [[Alwar]] and [[Bandikui]]in 1874.<ref>[http://www. irfca.org/faq/faq-history2.html] IRFCA - Chronology of railways in India, Part 2 (1870 - 1899)</ref> In 1875, the line had extended as far as [[Ajmer]] with the aim to reach [[Ahmadabad]] and to connect to the Broad Gauge ([[Rail_gauge#Broad_Gauge|BG]]) of the [[Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway]](BB&CIR).
In 1879, the RSR was again authorised to build new lines in metre gauge.
