Summary
Spain came into the Seven Years War against Britain in 1762. Colonel William Draper promoted a plan to Parliament to attack Manila. The British Government persuaded the East India Company to back the campaign on the promise of increased trade. The fleet set sail from Madras on 1 August 1762 and although Manila was successfully stormed, the British could not maintain a hold on the Philippines in the face of local resistance. The colony was restored to Spain under the Treaty of Paris though fighting continued until news reached the East Indies. The British withdrew from Manila but illegally continued to occupy a base on the Sulu islands until 1773.
