The first troop of regular cavalry in the Bombay Presidency was raised in 1803. A second troop was raised in 1816 and both were brought up to regimental strength in 1817. A third regiment was raised in 1842.

In addition there were Irregular Cavalry units or Local Horse raised by Europeans on the silladar system.

The Bombay Cavalry was not affected by the Indian Mutiny and the regiments lasted until independence in 1947.
