Eastern Bengal and Assam Districts

The Province of Bengal at the end of the 19th century was a huge administrative area. It was hoped that dividing it between the mainly Hindu west (comprising West Bengal with Bihar and Orissa) and the mainly Muslim east would be a political and administrative improvement. Partition was confirmed in October 1905. Opposition by Hindu nationalists eventually led to the re-uniting of Eastern Bengal with western Bengali districts and the creation of Assam as a separate province in 1912.
