Evan Stephens (1870-1908)

Trained at Swindon Technical College and subsquently at Villiers Engineering Company near Swansea [1].

Railway Achievements in India

  • 1897, East Indian Railway(EIR), appointed covented draughtsman and personal assistant to the Carriage and Wagon Superintendent at Howrah [1]. (This being Richard Pearce until 1898, then Tomyns Reginald Browne from 1899-1901). He was engaged on the design and erection of rolling stock [1].
  • c.1899 EIR Carriage and Wagon Workshop at Lillooah, engaged on design and construction of new workshops [1] which opened in 1900
  • 1902, Bengal Nagpur Railway(BNR), Assistant Engineer, having charge of the drawing and estimating offices and assisting generally in inspection work.
  • 1906, promoted to take charge of the BNR Calcutta District. His health had for some time been very indifferent, and on medical advice he was transferred to the East Coast, but the change did not have the desired effect, and he had to take sick leave early in 1907. Died in England in 1908 [1].
