Field Marshal Hugh Henry Rose, 1st Baron Strathnairn GCB GCSI (1801-1885) was a British soldier who came to India in 1857 to command the Poona Division of the Bombay Army. He then took command of the newly created Central Indian Field Force and led the Central India Campaign. He won a series of notable victories including the storming of Jhansi and the capture of Gwalior. He was appointed commander-in-chief of the Bombay army and subsequently Commander-in-Chief in India. He returned to Britain in 1865.
