The Indian Order of Merit was an order awarded by the East India Company to its native troops for gallantry. First awarded as simply the "Order of Merit" in 1837, it was divided into three classes. It was altered in 1902 to the "Indian Order of Merit" to distinguish it from the British Order of Merit.
