Civil Engineers were not regarded as Covenanted Servants yet they regarded themselves as superior to Uncovenanted Servants; hence the alteration to most list titles to accommodate them 'before' Uncovenanted Servants. The title of this sub-series does not mention Railways and indeed it does appear that the Records of Railway Companies were added later in no particular order, their inclusion being either at the front, or the end or interspersed between. All records appear to contain similar information, like that of 'B' forms:-
'Name, Description of Appt, Salary and Period of Residence in India', vide Director General of Railways, 1 Apr 1884
Example: G L Molesworth, CIE, MICE, Consulting Engineer for State Railways, 3,000R.p.m., Residence 12 yrs 10 mths
These lists were all-embracing with Ticket Collectors 30R.p.m. and Shunters at 54 R.p.m. Similar forms were used by the PWD where they were referred to as PWD 94 or PWD 111. The Railway (and other) records are too numerous to list in detail here, but the notes below will give some indication of their contents. Some worthy of note are mentioned below. Some of these lists may be available in other IOR Series, as well in other Volumes of this Series.

At least a dozen sets of Railway staff records and a similar number of PWD records. Military Works Depts show staff of Foundry and Shell Factory at Cossipore; Gun Carriage Factory at Fatehgarh; Small Arms Ammunition Factory at Dum Dum.
Staff at the Colliery Branches in the Central Provinces are shown again. As usual staff of the PWD Bombay are shown in printed format. Example:-
H G Palliser Chief Engineer, 2nd class, 2,000R p.m., Period in India - 32 yrs, 5mths, 4 days.
Once again this illustrates that in using these records one can only obtain a record of service by noting details year to year.
