Martin Louis Alan Gompertz (1886-1951) who wrote under the name "Ganpat" was an officer in the Indian Army until he retired in 1939.
He mainly wrote adventure stories and science fiction, often set in the Himalayas, and also wrote two travel books on Ladakh, which were published in the 1920s and 1930s. He had started his writing career with articles for Blackwood's Magazine on his service in East Africa during World War 1.
