Ootacamund Land Reclamation Project Tramway
The low-lying ground at the head of the Ootacamund Lake, Niligiris District, became inundated during every monsoon season creating a swamp and causing disease. In 1868 the Madras Presidency Public Works Department commenced a project to raise the ground six inches(15cm) above the level of the lake and create what is now known as Ooty Park [1].
As part of this project a hand-worked tramway of unknown gauge was used to transport earth to create the embankments, convicts carried out the work. The equipment used was put up for sale in 1899 [1].
