Passport applications in India

• Some details of passports were sent to the UK from India and these are held in the British Library and form part of the L/P/J series. For example there is a series of duplicate passports under IOR/L/PJ/11. The passports are mainly for Asians but include some Europeans and Eurasians. Details can be found by searching the Britsh Library Catalogue. There is also an index volume on the open shelves.

• The Assam States Archives holds passport application records. It is possible that other State Archives in India hold similar records.

Passport application records at the Assam State Archives

The Assam State Archives has a download available from its website, listing passport applications for the period 1920-32 and 1936-41. Dates of birth of the applicants are also included. Refer below.
