Singareni Collieries Light Railway
Coal was discovered in the area around Yellandu in the Khammam district in 1871. The Hyderabad (Deccan) Co Ltd obtained mining rights in 1886 [1].
A 2ft/610mm narrow gauge(NG) mines locomotive was in operation by 1889 but the extent and the development of the light railway network has not been determined, by 1910 the railway the output had risen to 470,000 tons of coal per annum. There are records of other NG locomotives being in service from 1902-1919, but these details are not complete [1].
The broad gauge(BG) Singareni Coal Fields Railway opened 1888 and became the Nizam's Guaranteed State Railway 'NGSR Mineral Branch'. A line from Dornakal Junction to Singareni Coalfields, 16 miles(26km) ) [2]
The 'Singareni Collieries Company Limited' was formed in 1923 and bears the same name today [3].
