The Bombay force, under the command of [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugh_Rose,_1st_Baron_Strathnairn Sir Hugh Rose], should march from Mhow to Gwalior and Jhansi, and the Madras force, which was to be led by [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_Grant Sir Patrick Grant], should march towards Nagpore. These two columns were to act in concert to defeat rebel forces under the command of [http://www.britannica.com/eb/topic-582772/Tantia-Topi Tantia Topi].
