The French under [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_François_Dupleix Joseph Francois Dupleix] sought to increase their influence in the Carnatic by making alliances with native princes. They supported one claimant to succeed as Nizam of [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyderabad_State Hyderabad] and the British countered by supporting another faction.  [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Clive,_1st_Baron_Clive Robert Clive] rose to prominence when he reversed the ailing British fortunes by attacking [[Arcot ]] and won a series of victories. Following the[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Pondicherry Treaty of Pondicherry] , Mohammad Ali became Nizam and Hyderabad a powerful ally of the British. Dupleix retired to France in disgrace.
