Capt Calvert with one other officer, a sergeant and 500 sepoys of the [[10th Regiment of Madras Native Infantry|14th Battalion of Coast Sepoys]] together with 15 Europeans held out for nearly a month against Hyder Ali's forces. Col Smith's arrival caused the besieging force to retire. The 14th Coast Sepoys were given the title the Amboor Battalion in honour of their bravery.
