== History ==
The French arrived in 1673. It became Bengal’s larger trading centre - bigger than neighbouring Calcutta. Its importance fell after being taken by the British. Colonel Robert Clive of Brittish East India Company Limited and Admiral Watson captured Chandannagar in the [[Battle of Chandernagore 1757]]Control was returned to the French in 1816 where it remianed until independance.
