'''Toungoo''' was the headquarters of [http://dsal.uchicago.edu/reference/gazetteer/pager.html?objectid=DS405.1.I34_V23_427.gif Toungoo District] in the Toungoo Tenasserim Division of Lower Burma during the British period. It was situated on the Rangoon-Mandalay Railway, part of the [[Burma Railway]], 166 miles from Rangoon, and 220 miles from Mandalay. Up until 1893, Toungoo was an important cantonment.
