Abbottabad is named for its founder and first Deputy Commissioner of the Hazara region, [[James Abbott]], a British officer. Abbot founded the town in January 1853<ref>''Gazetteer of the Hazara District, 1883-84'' Published by the Government of the Punjab, Lahore, 1884, p.36 </ref>.
