The Assam Saw Mill & Timber Company Railway opened at Sadiya in 1920. It manufactured plywood for the construction of tea chests for the local tea industry. The record indicates that a 2ft/610mm narrow gauge([[Rail_gauge#Narrow_Gauge|NG]]) locomotive dated 1920 was operating at the Sadiya factory <ref name =darvill/>.
