Periyar Dam and Reservoir Construction was undertaken between 1887 and 1895 on the Periyar River, Thekady, [[Travancore|Travancore State]]. The work was undertaken by the Madras Presidency [[Public Works Department]] and required the construction of a dam to create the reservoir <ref name =darvill>“Industrial Railways and Locomotives of India and South Asia” compliled by Simon Darvill. In 1889 2ft 6in/762mm narrow gauge([[Rail_gauge#Narrow_Gauge|NG]]) [[John Fowler & Company Ltd| 'John Fowler']] side tipping trucks and track were supplied to the site. Further track in 1892 was for the new quarries and new sidings at Periyar, a second tramway to the dam, a tramway below No3 dam and for extending lines in the tunnels at Thekady <ref name =darvill/>.
