: The author is stated to be Katharine Blanche Guthrie. If so, she may have been Katherine Blanche, daughter of Thomas Starkie, Esq., Queen's Counsel. who married the Rev. Lowry Guthrie 23 February 1846. She travelled from England, with a female companion, possibly her daughter and was met by G, and proceeded to Belgaum. G is probably a relative, possibly son-in-law, who appears to have been in government employment, but it is unclear whether he was in the Army or Civil Service.
