A resident of Belgium, her house was turned into a hospital until the Germans took it over. In 1915 she was convicted by the Germans for sheltering Allied soldiers. Nurse Edith Cavell who was tried at the same time was shot for her part in these activities, however Princess Marie was sent to a civil prison in Germany which held criminals such as murderers and remained there until the war ended in 1918.
