A Travelling Auditor was a Railway Employee who had the responsibility for checking the finances of the various stations in his area. A description in 1867 relating to East India Railway staff explains that he should visit each station under his charge every 3 months, to examine accounts, ascertain cash balances, see actual cash in hand, compare it with book balances, make notes for his seniors. [1].

An Administration Report of the Indian Railways 1891-1892 mentions that, in connection with Madras Railways, a bungalow was built at Gooty for the Travelling Auditor [2].
