Chronology
- 1803 raised as 2nd Btn 21st Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry following 1796 reorganisation when previous 21st was absorbed by the 12th Regiment
- 1824 2nd Battalion became 42nd Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry under Major W Swinton
- 1842 became 42nd Bengal Native (Light) Infantry
In the Indian Mutiny the regiment did not rebel and, in the ensuing disbandment of Bengal Army regiments, the 42nd became the fifth most senior.
- 1861 became 5th Bengal Native (Light) Infantry
