Serves as Assistant to the [[Collector]]-Magistrate in the [[Indian Civil Service]]. After training, an Assistant would have initially posted to a District Station, after a year the Assistant would go to a Sub-Division of the District. Usually it was a remote station where he is the only white occupant other than the odd planter. His role was magistrate, and had accounting / treasury tasks along with being  postmaster.
