The Howrah-Burdwan Chord Railway was part of East Indian Railway(EIR) system. The broad gauge(BG) opened in 1917 and provided shorter link to Burdwan from the EIR hub at Howrah. Prior to the opening of the Howrah-Burdwan chord the only line was the Sheoraphuli-Tarakeshwar Railway which had been constructed in 1885. [1]
The Howrah to Saktighar section of the EIR network was completed in 1917; 45 miles(72km)[2] .
The line, length 55 miles(87km) from Lillooah station, 4 miles from Howrah was to relieve the heavily worked section of the EIR network to Burdwan [3]
