The Howrah Municipality operated a 2ft/610mm narrow gauge(NG) Conservancy Tramway that carried the night soil of Howrah to a trenching ground at Belgachia [1].

The Howrah Municipality Conservancy Tramway. The Sleakhalla line operated on the same gauge and followed the same routing within the Municipality and it is thought the company incorporated the line and used it during the night to permit the movement of night soil . The conservancy line ran up the Belgachia Road to a trenching ground that was 1 mile (1.6km) from the Sheakhalla line.

History

The date the tramway became operational is unknown

Two locomotives dating from 1887 from the 'Howrah Municipality Conservancy Tramway' are known to have become part of the Howrah-Amta Light Railway and Howrah-Sheakhalla Light Railway in 1899 and 1901 respectively. It is unknown if Martin's Light Railways, the operators of these two light railways, had taken over the contract [1].

The tramway was reported as operational in 1909 [2].

In 1910 the records show the purchase of 28 Conservancy Wagons [1], so the system was in use at that time.
