Henry James Bennett Hargrave( 1838-1905)

Engineer-in-Chief of the ‘Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway’ (BB&CIR),
He is not to be confused with his nephew Henry Hargrave Deane who was an engineer with the Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway from 1883 to 1915 [1].

Railway Achievements in India

1859: Joined the ‘Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway’ (BB&CIR) [2], he rose to the position of Chief Engineer [1]

1866-70: ’Reclamation of Back Bay, Bombay’[2].
The narrow strip of land that had been reclaimed was obtained by the Government and given to Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway(BB&CIR) to enable them to lay a line from the Churchgate to Colaba.
Comment - The date 1876-70 is as given in the Grace’s Guide account, cited as extracted from the ‘Weekly Irish Times’ 5 August 1905, it is believed this should read 1866-70, so has been changed.

1878-81: Engineer on the building of the Nerbudda Bridge[2]
Comment - The date 1878-81 is as given in the Grace’s Guide account. However the records show that the Nerbudda Bridge carried the ‘Holkar State Railway’ and opened in 1876
