He initially served in the British Army with the [[61st Regiment of Foot]], with the  52nd  (briefly), became on attachment, 2nd in command, and then in command,  of the [[7th Regiment of Punjab Infantry|7th Punjab Infantry]], Bengal Army for approximately 20 months, during the [[Indian Mutiny]],  on active service near Cawnpore, was then with the 25th (in England)  and exchanged into the 95th Regiment of Foot in order to return to India, which he did in in 1860, appointed to the Indian Army Indian Staff Corps 1862.

Chronology

  • 1816 formed as the 95th Regiment of Foot when the 95th Rifles were redesignated The Rifle Brigade

  • 1881 united with the 45th Regiment of Foot to form the Sherwood Foresters (Derbyshire Regiment) and became 2nd Battalion
  • 1958 became part of the Forester Brigade
  • 1963 became part of the Mercian Brigade
  • 1970 amalgamated with The Worcestershire Regiment to form The Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment (29th/45th Foot).
  • 2004 amalgamated to become 2nd Battalion The Mercian Regiment
