Chronology

In the Indian Mutiny the 59th Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry did not rebel and, in the ensuing disbandment of Bengal Army regiments, it became the eighth most senior.

  • 1861 became 8th Bengal Native Infantry
  • 1897 became 8th (Rajput) Bengal Infantry
  • 1901 became 8th Rajput Infantry
  • 1922 became 4th Battalion 7th Rajput Regiment
  • 1947 allocated to India on Partition
  • 1947 became 4th Battalion the Rajput Regiment
  • 1956 amalgamated into The Punjab Regiment
