Major General Sir Henry Tombs VC KCB (1825–1874) was a soldier of the East India Company who was born in Calcutta and joined the Bengal Artillery in 1841. He was renowned for his bravery and leadership. He served in the Gwalior Campaign 1843, the Sutlej Campaign 1845-46 and the Punjab Campaign. He commanded a troop of horse artillery during the Indian Mutiny and won the VC at the Siege of Delhi. He commanded the Bhutan Field Force in the Duar War 1865. Ill health forced his retiremant to England in 1874 where he died at the early age of 49.
