Originaly raised on 29th December 1875 as the Great Indian Peninsula Railway Volunteer Corps and on 5th August 1908 amalgamated with the Midland Railway Volunteer Corps, which was raised on 22nd August 1890 and became the 2nd Battalion. On 1st April 1917 became the 13th Great Indian Peninsula Railway Battalion and then the Great Indian Peninsula Railway Regiment on 1st October 1920.
