Assistant
Serves as Assistant to the Collector-Magistrate in the Indian Civil Service. After training, an Assistant would have initially posted to a District Station, after a year the Assistant would go to a Sub-Division of the District. Usually it was a remote station where he is the only white occupant other than the odd planter. His role was magistrate, and had accounting / treasury tasks along with being postmaster.
Benefits of the position were game shooting - especially controlling big game that pestered the locals. An Assistant will take 10 years to rise through the ranks to become a Collector-Magistrate.
