The [[Indian Mutiny]] which started in Meerut spread from town to town and reached Jhansi on 5 June 1857 where the 12th Bengal Native Infantry rebelled. They killed two British officers, took possession of the Star Fort with its guns and treasure, plundered the town and released prisoners from the gaol. The remaining Europeans took refuge in the Town Fort and appealed to the [[Rani Lakshmibai|Rani of Jhansi]] who sent them guns and ammunition. Summary
The Indian Mutiny which started in Meerut spread from town to town and reached Jhansi on 5 June 1857 where the 12th Bengal Native Infantry rebelled.
