: The author is stated to be Katharine Blanche Guthrie.If so, she may have been Katherine Blanche, daughter of Thomas Starkie, Esq., Queen's Counsel. who married the Rev. Lowry Guthrie 23 February 1846. She travelled from England, with a female companion M, possibly/probably her daughter and was met by M's husband, G and proceeded to Belgaum. G was  Provost-Marshal (page 81, MYiaIF, Volume I). It is stated his garden  was the "finest in Belgaum".

Belgaum



Belgaum came under the control of the British in 1818 at the end of the 3rd Maratha War when the Maratha empire was broken up. It was the headquarters of Belgaum District in the Southern division of Bombay Presidency during the British period.

A cantonment was located there.
