Mohammed Ali, son of the Nawab of Arcot defeated at Amboor, took refuge in Trichinopoly. A British force under Captain Gingen sent to assist him was routed at Volconda (Valikandapuram) and retreated to Trichi. They were besieged by the usurper Chanda Sahib.
Mohammed Ali obtained the help of the Kingdom of Mysore which sent a force in the middle of October and Stringer Lawrence arrived with a British force. The besiegers retreated to Srirangam where they were eventually forced to surrender.
