Cuddalore and Salem Light Railway
The India Office Records (IOR) records held at the British Library show that a light railway operating on a cart road between Cuddalore and Salem was first suggested in 1854-5. See ‘Records’ below.
No evidence has been found that this project was adopted.
The South Indian Railway(SIR) connection from Cuddalore and Salem via Virudhachalam opened as a metre gauge(MG) line after 1909.

- Z/E/4/25/P872; “Public Works, Engineers, Madras, Suggestion of Chief for construction of light railway on roads between Cuddalore and Salem and Masulipatam and Hyderabad “;1854-1855.
- Z/E/4/25/R866; Roads, Cuddalore to Salem, formation of cart, sanctioned to connect with sea port and question as to fitness for tram or light”; 1854-1855
