- 1809 raised at Farrukhabad and Mainpuri by William Linnaeus Gardner as Gardner’s Horse
- 1823 became 2nd (Gardner's) Local Horse
- 1840 became 2nd Irregular Cavalry
- 1861 became 2nd Regiment of Bengal Cavalry
- 1890 became 2nd Regiment of Bengal Lancers
- 1903 became 2nd Lancers (Gardner’s Horse)
- 1921 absorbed the 4th Lancers
- 1935 became the 2nd Royal Lancers (Gardner's Horse)
- 1947 allocated to India on Partition

Twin brothers Osborn and Johnson Wilkinson were born 1822. The former joined the Bengal Cavalry in 1844, and served initially in the 10th Light Bengal Cavalry, and subsequently the 2nd Bengal Cavalry, (and perhaps other cavalry regiments); the latter HM 15th Regiment of Foot, which went to Ceylon in 1845, with a period at Poona.
